Misconceptions About Refrigerant

Service,

The beginning of each summer season is usually met with a slue of very hot days. When the weather changes, so does our comfort! At Chapman, we’ve become accustomed to the increasing temperatures and increasing calls from our customers whose air conditioners are not keeping up, or simply not cooling. One comment that we hear a lot is that people want their system to be recharged, or have a little refrigerant put in their system for the summer, but this is actually a common misconception about how this system operates.

It is true that there are other refrigerated systems that use up their refrigerant over time. Even after a long, hot summer though, the refrigerant in your air conditioner will not “wear out.” This is because of the closed loop design of your air conditioner is designed to recycle the same amount of refrigerant for the life of the system. In fact, the refrigerant is really used to transfer the heat out of your home, not cool the air in your home.

If you are finding yourself adding refrigerant at any point, there is a leak somewhere in the coils, and a leak search needs to be performed. Once the leak is found, a technician will quote you the cost of repairing the leak or replacing the part.

Don’t forget to check these quick fixes if your air is warmer than normal, or call Chapman today!
