Friggatriskaidekaphobia

Fun!,

Friday the thirteenth is a day that is surrounded by much lore. The fear of Friday the 13th is known as friggatriskaidekaphobia and affects an estimated 17-21 million Americans! This Friday, millions of Americans will be so paralyzed by their fear of this date they won’t even get out of bed. Not to mention, start a trip or sit down to dinner with 13 people. It’s the most wide spread superstition in America and dates back to the 1800’s. This month we have an extra special Friday the 13th because there will also be a full moon that night.

Here at Chapman we took a poll to see if our team could offer some insight to Friday the 13th:

Shana said when she was in elementary school her and her friends would wear thirteen safety pins on their clothes to ward off any bad energy. Safety first is never a bad idea!

Sarah told us she doesn’t buy into superstitions, but she has spilled something every day this week so far! Needless to say we won’t be letting her carry anything breakable on Friday.

Heidi D. told us that she usually doesn’t think about Friday the 13th but since it will be a full moon too, she is taking extra notice of the day this month. I’ll update if she wears a garlic necklace to work on Friday.

Mady said she used to think it was an unlucky day, but in fourth grade she found $5 on the sidewalk on the way to school and has since thought it was kind of a lucky day.

So, whatever your beliefs are surrounding Friday the 13th, I think it’s always safe to follow the words of Michael Scott and not be superstitious, but maybe just a little stitious. Stay safe out there!
