Memorial Day 2016

Fun!,

This Memorial Day I have been hearing a lot in the media about sales, vacation plans, and backyard barbeques. While it’s nice to have a day off, it is important to remember the reason that we are able to do these things. This year for Memorial Day I challenged myself to learn about the history behind Memorial Day. I was surprised to learn about all the monuments and memorial walls there are all around the country, even in Columbia, Missouri! There is a lot we can do to honor those who have served our country, and we can start with learning about the holiday itself.

Memorial Day 2016 is on May 30th. This holiday is generally celebrated on the last Monday in May. Originally known as Decoration Day, this day was set in 1868, going all the way back to the Civil War. The original purpose for this holiday was for the families and friends of loved ones to be able to decorate the gravesite of those they lost in the war. This has been an especially honored tradition throughout time, and extends to decorating lawns, memorial walls, and even holding parades. The use of poppies in decoration is thought to be because of the time of year that Memorial Day is observed.

This holiday reminds us of the importance of all our troops and how thankful we are for our freedom. Memorial Day is often confused with Veterans Day (celebrated in November). The difference between these holidays is Memorial Day specifically honors those who have passed during their service to our country, whereas Veteran’s Day celebrates all who have served.

This Memorial Day there is a lot to be thankful for. As we celebrate time at the lake, 20% off plus free shipping, and everything off the grill, take a moment to honor those who have given their lives for our freedom.
