Humidifier Options & Benefits

It is the time of year we start to think about the switch from the humid summer air to dry winter air. We have found humidification has many benefits to your home’s comfort.  Some of those humidifier benefits include: reduces dry skin, reduces dry sinuses, protects your wood furnishings, stops those pesky static shocks and can even save you money!

There are many options in humidifiers.  We are going to discuss the whole house system versus the single room units.

Whole House Humidifiers

The whole house humidifiers are installed directly to your HVAC systems.  The whole house systems typically operate more efficiently and affordably.  They have a water panel that is changed once or twice during the heating season.  They are installed with a water supply, so you can avoid adding water. They consume less energy to balance the humidity in your entire home.

Single Room Humidifiers

The single room are portable and can be placed anywhere in your home.  They have a lower capacity water reservoir requiring frequent filling by the home owner.  Their humidification is limited to the area around them, so it may require more than one humidifier for your home.  Single room humidifiers can be noisier and develop mold or bacteria, where the whole house systems can avoid these issues.

Avoid the White Dust!

If you find the single room humidifier is the option that best fits your home’s comfort needs, we would recommend using distilled water.  When you use the single room humidifier without distilled water, it can produce a white dust.  That white dust is usually caused by minerals in the water supplied to the humidifier. When the mist from the humidifier lands on surfaces or furniture and dries, it leaves behind those mineral deposits or the white dust.  Chapman Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing technicians have found that white dust can clog your home’s filter with a seemingly invisible dust.  The filter will appear clean, but will be full of those mineral deposits.  Those mineral deposit will then restrict the air flow to your system causing your system to not operate correctly.  The easiest solution to avoid the white dust is to use distilled water in your portable single room humidifiers.  This can help you avoid a service repair visit too!
