A Holiday Plumbing Guide for you
The holidays can a stressful on your plumbing. We have a few holiday tips to keep your water flowing where it needs to be going!
- Don’t over work your Garbage Disposal
Meal Preparation can create an abundance of scraps. It is best to not overload your garbage disposal. You should avoid putting fibrous or stringy foods, rice, pasta, bread, animal bones or fat, cooking oil, grease, potato skins or eggshells in your drain.
After dinner scrape the leftovers into the trash instead of down your drain. Also, use a drain strainer when rinsing dishes to keep unwanted food or waste from clogging up your drain. Using a drain maintenance product regularly can keep drains open and flowing.
Also, wait to run dishwasher after you are finished using your kitchen sink. It might be tempting to start your dishwasher when it is full, while you are still cleaning up the rest of the kitchen. However, typically your sink and dishwasher use the same drain. You might tax the kitchen drain causing a backup!
- Make sure you have Hot Water
The holidays can bring extra guests to your house. Planning for showers will keep you from having to take a COLD shower! If you are using a traditional hot water heater you will want to wait 10-15 minutes between guest. This allows your hot water supply to replenish AND can give your drain time to clear.
If you have frequent guest, you may want to invest in a tankless water heater. The unlimited hot water supply will ensure you never have to take a cold shower! Chapman Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing is certified to install Navien tankless water heaters.

While hosting guests your toilets will be working a harder than normal. In order to keep your plumbing in order make sure guest know not to flush the following: sanitary napkins, cleansing wipes, facial pads, cotton ball, or paper towels.
