Why you need a low level Carbon Monoxide Detector?

Carbon Monoxide Detectors can play an important role in keeping your family and pets safe.  If you have gas appliances, such as, furnaces, fireplaces, and stoves there is a risk that you can be exposed to carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, tasteless harmful gas.  Another common possible exposure is from an attached garage, a running vehicle can introduce carbon monoxide to your attached living space.  Investing in a carbon monoxide monitor for your home can serve as a necessary layer of protection.

Why we recommend a low level carbon monoxide monitor

Chapman Heating Cooling and Plumbing recommends a low level carbon monoxide detector.  These low level monitors are able to detect carbon monoxide (CO) levels as low as 5 PPM (parts per million) and will alarm at 15 PPM, which is the first level that can have harmful effects.  The monitors we recommend let you know exactly how much carbon monoxide is in your home’s air at any given time on the digital display.  Carbon Monoxide exposure can cause nausea, headache, shortness of breath, chest pain, blurred vision and dizziness.  When you utilize carbon monoxide monitors in your home, you can avoid exposure to this harmful gas.

Annual maintenance allows for continuous monitoring

Another way to protect your home from CO is to have the annual maintenance done on your gas furnace.  We can monitor your furnace & venting system to make sure you don’t have issues.  As a homeowner, you know that appliances will fail.  However, when you do annual maintenance, we are able to continuously monitor your furnace to proactively catch any issues.  Also, any time you use a fuel burning appliance or engine you should make sure the area is properly ventilated. Our Chapman Comfort Club is a great program to keep you on track with your home’s annual maintenance.

Testing & Replacement of your monitors

Carbon monoxide detectors do require testing (check your manual to see the recommend testing procedures).  CO detectors do expire, most monitors should be replaced every 5-7 years to ensure they are in good working conditions.  Your monitor should have a manufacture date or expiration date on the back of it.  If your monitor is close to the end of its life, it can cause false alarms.

If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, the best thing to do is open the windows and doors and vacate the house. If you are interested in adding a low level monitor to your home, give us a call at 573-445-4489.
